Almost the same day we pulled into town for the first time Eliza asked if we could go to the Pioneer Village on State St. The only problem was that it is only open during the summer and it closed soon after we arrived. The following summer the same thing happened because we were in Austin for most of the summer. BUT, this summer we had a couple of weeks in between when it opened and when we left so we headed over to the Pioneer Village on its opening day. I must admit that I had low expectations for the attraction but I was very wrong. They have a crack team of volunteers that told us so many interesting facts. (Example: One of the pioneer houses that they have on display was used as a house- with a lean-to kitchen and bathroom added on- until the early 2000's. Of course there were college students living in it. Crazy!) They had fun activities (The photos above are of the girls, and me, playing a game that helped train kids to be good cow milkers. You have to pull on the ropes to get the bears to climb up to the roof of the school house.), real pioneer houses to tour, an actual blacksmith with tools that you could try out to do some leather working in his shop, pioneer clothes to try on, and an old fashioned store with candy to try. They really do a nice job of bringing the era to life and I'm glad that the kids kept pestering us so that we didn't miss it!
