Please notice the hearts with polka dots over her name, she told me that she wanted to make it extra fancy.
At long last Leona got to start school! She was sooooooo excited! She wore her sequin shirt and sparkly pink pants to fully celebrate the day. She was only a little bit nervous and mostly just really exuding her trademark Leona enthusiasm for the start of school.
The first couple of weeks were actually kind of rough as Leona struggled a little bit to make friends. She was a little bit nervous about approaching kids and asking them to play with her. She also took a hit to her confidence when a well known friend ignored her when she tried to play with her at recess. It was heartbreaking to watch my friendly, sweet Leona feel like she had no friends. We role played asking people to play and practiced striking up conversations. After a couple of weeks though Leona found her footing and made friends with everybody that she came into contact with. After that first little bit there haven't been any hesitations about school and Leona has lots of friends and is always looking forward to the next play date.
Her dream came true of getting to ride the bus! As she got off the bus she was rattling off all the parts of her day so fast as she hoofed it down the hill that I couldn't catch half of what she was saying. Leona was thrilled to finally be one of the big kids! Miss Debbie, the bus driver, told me after a couple of weeks that Leona was an absolute delight to have on the bus. She said that Leona is cheerful, helpful, happy to sit next to anyone that Miss Debbie needs her to sit by, and is always smiling.
